If you suspect that an area may be home to paranormal activity (ie. ghosts, hauntings, unusual energy fields, etc.), it is important to first get as many facts as you can before you jump to any conclusions (or jump out of your skin!).
While many people (as well as many paranormal investigation groups), rely heavily on mediums, psychics, sensitives, etc. to give them most of the information they need to determine the cause for paranormal activity in an area, the members of PA Paranormal Investigations feel that it is much better (for us, at least), to rely first on historical facts (found in libraries, historical societies, interviews, etc.); secondly, relying on the "common sense facts" we find in the area we are investigating (such as power lines, generators, surrounding buildings, etc.); and finally on hardcore evidence; such as photographs, recorded sounds, etc.
If, after completing all of the above steps, we determine that there is indeed paranormal activity in the area, then it may be possible for us to consult a reputed psychic or medium to help us learn more facts (all of which will be verified afterwards).
It is not that we are mistrustful of such people as psychics and sensitives, but it has been our experience that such people do not always receive correct information or, depending on the person, may interpret their feelings and impressions through their own experiences, altering the "real" psychic energies until they are no longer helpful. And, yes, we have also met quite a few loonies... The sad fact is, not all people who claim to be psychic or sensitive are telling the truth.
We feel it is best to stick to the facts so that we have a strong foundation to stand upon if we do happen to come across something paranormal. We are skeptics, yes. We are scientific to a degree, that is true. But we take what we do seriously (but it's always fun) and we will not allow what we do to be tainted by "cosmic" silliness or "psychic" babble.
PA Paranormal Investigations tries to be as thorough as possible in our work. This is why we need as much help as you can give us when contacting us! Remember: you can never have too many historical facts. Just because you don't find something "cool" or "important" when researching an area, it does not mean that it has no history. We believe every home has a soul, every place has a memory, and every thing has experiences. That is why hauntings or paranormal activity are not limited to old, creepy houses. A brand new structure, a plot of land, an antique piece of furniture...all of these things can be home to energies that humans are only beginning to understand.
Before contacting us for help, please review the following checklist and try to be as thorough as you can!
~Determine the type of paranormal activity (ie. haunting, psychic impression (ghost), unusual energy fields, etc.) Note: this can be difficult to figure out at first. Here are some important notes to remember:
A HAUNTING is identified (for our purposes) as a SPIRIT roaming through an area. An example would be the spirit of a loved one who wishes to watch over the living until they, too, pass on.
A GHOST is identified as the IMPRESSION of energy left on an area or object by a traumatic event, such as a suicide, murder, or accident. An example would be seeing a woman in white throw herself from a balcony every year on the anniversary of the "real" suicide. These are often confused with hauntings but they are, in actuality, just RECORDINGS of a powerfully traumatic event on an area. The recording cannot see, think, or act on its own. It is just a recording.
Please note: we do not use the terms GHOST and SPIRIT interchangeably. They each have their own specific meanings, as defined above. I realize some opinions vary on this. This is just how we do it.
An UNUSUAL ENERGY FIELD is defined as a strange source of energy giving unusual readings in an area, especially where there is absolutely no PHYSICAL CAUSE (such as power lines, construction sites, or whatever). These are generally thought of as LEY LINES, which are almost like lines of psychic energy that run through the earth, connecting places of power, such as Stonehenge, Pyramids, etc.
~After determining what type of activity you are dealing with, collect HISTORICAL information (previous owners, if any, unusual occurences on or around the area, etc.). This is the most important step in your personal investigation. Remember to write everything down and keep a record of where you got your information. This is all very important for when you will need to validate your findings with us. Remember: just because you don't find anything "scary", does not negate paranormal possibilities.
~obtain permission (if needed) to enter the property, have an investigative team enter the property, and spend some time there during the investigation. This is VERY important if you want to check out something on property that does not belong to you! Not only is it illegal to enter private property, it's just downright rude. While we will get permission for our group to enter property, we also ask that you do the same during your fact-finding process. Better to cover your own butt then to find yourself in trouble down the road.
~Keep neat, organized records. This is more important than you think. Keeping all of your records, notes, photographs, interviews, etc. neat and orderly will make everyone's life that much easier in the end. It is so important to keep records of the sources of your information that I feel I must stress it again. KEEP RECORDS OF THE SOURCES OF YOUR INFORMATION!!!!!!!!!! People generally do not trust heresay. They do, however, trust the written word (for some odd reason). It might also be a good idea to put your notes and records into the form of a report. Keep it simple, yet full of facts.
That's about all the advice I have for now. If, after going through all of the above steps, you determine that something "strange" is going on in your area, you can contact us and we'll check it out. Until then, HAPPY HUNTING!
